How To Use Ancient Techniques To Quieten The Mind

Do you struggle with being still?

Are you looking for a sense of peace in the midst of a chaotic world? You are not alone!

Long before modern technology introduced new distractions into our lives, as human beings, we have longed for a sense of inner peace and actively sought ways to quieten the mind.

What if there were secret time tested ways to inspire you to find daily moments of inner rest, peace and finally be able to think slowly and clearly again?

That’s exactly what we’ll explore today.

If you're seeking a way to quieten your mind and achieve inner peace, these four ancient techniques have been proven effective, even by today's standards. Here are some practical ways you can apply these ancient principles today

Not so long ago, while purchasing a candle, a young man shared with Chris how he felt his mind racing away most nights. He described his thoughts as,

"Like popcorns popping in a microwave oven."

And how it felt like every night there was a party going on in his mind.

Yet all he wanted to do was have a peaceful night's rest.

Chris introduced him to our Beautician and The Pharmacist Destress Goodnight Cream, and the rest is history.

At Seema with Love at Westfield Chermside, we love sharing the beautiful handmade soy candles with our customers. Many people often express, how they find them almost therapeutic and especially soothing.

Now, if you are someone who finds it hard to find inner peace and rest then I'm sure you'll appreciate the techniques I'm going to share with you today. These are tested and tried methods that have been used effectively by so many people in the past.

So let's get started.

Ancient Technique 1: The Art of Meditation

1. Practice Breathing Meditation.

'Breathing meditation' is a simple and effective method for calming your mind. Start by finding a comfortable and quiet place where you can sit and observe your breath. Close your eyes and focus on your 'breathing in' and 'breathing out'.

It’s surprising how we go into 'shallow breathing' mode when we are anxious or stressed. The secret to making this work is to focus on 'breathing out' and emptying your lungs. You’ll 'breathe in' automatically.  With practice, you'll be able to meditate for longer periods and also place your mind on your breath in any surroundings.

2. Develop 'Single-Pointed' Concentration.

Train your mind to rest upon your 'object of meditation'. Whether it's a candle or a piece of scripture or prayer that you speak out. While meditating on your object of meditation, notice any distracting thoughts that pop up in your mind. Refuse to pursue them and try to actively bring your mind back to your chosen object.

If you prefer to think quietly and practice silence then our Seema with Love Handmade Candles are a great option. Imagine sitting quietly and just focussing on the candle flame as it elegantly dances on top of the scented, melted wax pool. You get the idea. We have many customers who love doing their quiet time this way.

3. Learn to Visualize.

Select images that promote happiness and serenity. Perhaps you may want to picture snow-capped mountains or sheep grazing in a meadow. Maybe it’s a picture of serene waves, gently rolling onto the beach.

Visualisation helps us create a new reality. It’s a powerful way to let go of emotions that are holding us back.

4. Focus on Positive Thoughts.

Many people soothe their minds by repeating any quote or thought that is meaningful for them.

If your meditation is part of spiritual practice, you can perhaps follow the prayers or written affirmations through in your mind.

I often find meditating on certain words of scripture or bible verses help me a lot. I often search for verses to do with peace and love and meditate on them to reclaim my inner peace.

One of my all-time favourite verses is not only calming, but it’s also very affirming that everything is going to be alright and God’s on my side.

It’s from 2 Timothy 1:7 “ For God has not given me a spirit of fear but of power, of love and a sound mind.” I always feel affirmed and strengthened after meditating on this one verse.

Ancient Technique 2: The Soothing Qualities of Water

Water is so essential to life in so many ways. We can't live without it even for a few days. Yet it also has perhaps one of the most calming properties of any element in nature.

1. Take a Bath.

Cultures all over the world have long appreciated the calming effects of water. A simple warm bath can easily soothe our nerves and bring relief to tired and sore muscles. When you fill-up your bath, try resting your head on a bath pillow and adding some comforting scents like sandalwood or lavender. Turn the lights down low, play soft music and light up a relaxing Seema with Love Candle. The Revive or Lavender Ylang Ylang candle is an excellent choice if you’re looking for suggestions.

2. Surround Yourself with the Sound of Water

Eat your lunch by a park fountain or install a solar-powered water feature in your own backyard. You can find recordings of waterfalls online or get a CD with aquatic effects that you can play anywhere you go.
You’ll be surprised how soothing and calming the sound of water is. Give it a try.

Ancient Technique No 3: Get Back to Nature

1. Go for a Walk.

In some eras, it was common for people to go on long retreats into the wilderness. Even a short break can do wonders to restore your peace of mind. Visit your local park or take a quiet walk around your neighbourhood. If you work indoors all week, use the weekend to explore scenic trails for biking and hiking.
You’ll be amazed at how therapeutic and relaxing it can be.

2. Cultivate a Garden.

When we were all in the COVID19 “lockdown”  in April, one of the activities that Chris and I enjoyed the most was gardening. Now I’ll be honest with you. Previously, it was rare to see my good husband in the garden. But as he tried to help me more in the gardens, he said he was pleasantly surprised how he found gardening to be a great way to slow down and appreciate nature.

Why not try a bit of this technique yourself? Devote a section of your backyard to growing flowers and vegetables. If you live in an apartment setting, select plants that will flourish indoors or on a balcony, like some species of palm trees and herbs.

3. Spend Time with Animals.

Spending time with our pets, dogs, cats, bird and even horses is so therapeutic. A bit of quiet time with our beloved furry creatures have even been proven to help people recover from surgery faster. Take your dog for a walk. Watch your cat at play. Sign up for horseback riding lessons. You’ll be surprised at how relaxing this can be.

Ancient Technique No.4: Live in the Present Moment

How do we do this?

1. Put the Past Behind You.

Dwelling on the past can make it difficult to feel composed. If you're thinking about past misfortunes, decide if you'd rather devote your energy to more constructive activities.

You see dwelling in the past holds us back. Sometimes you just have to let go for your own sanity.

Often you have to do little tangible activities that train your brain to release things that you perhaps have been holding onto subconsciously.

Here’s an example.

Try to write down how you are feeling about a particular situation. Then take the piece of paper, crumple it up and place it in a bowl of water. Watch how it soaks up the water and slowly disintegrates. Sometimes you might have to slowly stir the water. Let the disintegrating be a symbol of it losing its power over you.

Do it. You'll be amazed at how a simple act like this can help you break free from things that hold you back.

2. Adopt a Positive View of the Future.

Look I'll be honest with you. The future always carries some uncertainty.

But we can choose how we approach it with our thoughts and intentions. Focus on creating causes for a better future and patiently accepting whatever outcomes arise.

Spend more time thinking, planning and mapping out what you would like to see in your future. Then write down little actionable and measurable goals. Gaining clarity over your future will help you feel more relaxed and less stressed.

3. Enjoy the Present Moment.

Give your full attention to what is happening now. Is what’s happening around you impacting your emotions and how you feel?

Talk about it with a trusted family member, friend or mentor.

Take advantage of the opportunities before you and delight in the good things that surround you. Steer your mind towards wholesome thoughts and actions. Engage fully with the people who share your life.

In closing, I just wanted to say that many ancient techniques work equally well today for achieving a quiet mind regardless of external circumstances. With the methods we talked about today, you can create a welcoming environment for yourself and others and train your mind to enjoy greater peace.

And most importantly do not be afraid.

My personal prayer for you today is, “the peace that passes all understanding will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.”
