13 Simple Ways To Add More Happiness To Your Day

We love setting goals for everything else in life but what about when it comes to our personal happiness? Are we intentional about being happy or do we let life set the tone for our personal joy?

Look it's true. Every day has its ups and downs, but sometimes we end up having more downs than ups! I believe, rather than waiting around for things to change, we can definitely be more intentional about adding a little happiness to our days.

Sometimes we may need to make a big effort, but you'll be surprised how most of the time, all we have to do is something subtle and simple to completely change how our day turns out.

Here are 13 simple ways to sprinkle more happiness into your day. And yes not only our days can change but we can easily bring joy and happiness into the lives of those around us. How? Happy people make other people happy!

Here are some easy ways to add more happiness to your day:

1. Watch a Movie.

I know this can be a little hard currently in the midst of 'lockdown' but then again we have Netflix, Stan, Amazon Prime and so many more options streaming right into our homes. Why not make it a great movie day at home?

But be careful to choose movies that lift you up rather than those that glorify the darker things of life. Movies are a great escape especially when we find ones that inspire us or makes us laugh.

Curl up with a big bucket of popcorn and your favourite movie. Leave all your worries behind you as you engage in an activity that you're sure to love.

 

2. Watch Your Kids or Loved Ones.

Put your phone down! Sometimes we just need to stop scrolling through the endless social media feeds and the negative news pervading our happiness.

Instead, take some time to place your attention on the people you love. Simply observe them and think about how much you appreciate the fact that they're in your life. Have a conversation with them. Ask them how they are going? Talk about their dreams and aspirations.

You'll be amazed by how little conversations make all the difference.

3. Call Your Best Friend.

When was the last time you did this? Today is the day to pick up the phone and make that call. A phone call with a close friend is a great way to pass some time in a way that is comfortable and familiar to you. You can think about old times or enjoy planning something fun for the future.

4. Go Out For A Coffee or An Ice Cream.

While it's not a good idea to indulge all the time, it's definitely okay once in a while. Grab your favourite treat whether it's ice cream, a smoothie, or even coffee. Have a good old storytime with your loved one or friend. When you share your happiness with someone, you will also receive so much more back.

5. Enjoy Nature.

Take in nature by watching the world around you. You can do this by going on a nature hike or even just observing the beauty of the stars at night. Sometimes you might not feel as happy as you'd like because you expect too much from yourself. Take some time to simply be lazy, with no responsibilities, and give yourself time to recoup.

How about a day with no schedules?

Just you, doing those things that truly make you happy. No housework, no running around no errands. Just you having time to rest.

In the Bible, it's similar to the concept of Sabbath. A special day of rest and spending time with your maker. It's true when it's said the Sabbath was not made for God but for man. It's like He knew we would need this to rebalance our life every week.

10. Listen to Your Favourite Song.

Your favourite song is bound to brighten up your day. Bring out your iPod, iPhone, headphones or music player and start cranking up the tunes. Somedays I am dancing around in the kitchen while I am cooking, other days I sit in my quiet time listening to some wonderful worship songs. Music definitely brings me so much joy and happiness.

11. Make Casual Conversations

When was the last time you struck up a conversation with a stranger in a cue or a retail assistant in a shop or maybe someone on the train? Try having some lively conversations with strangers. If you're friendly and happy towards them, they'll likely be the same to you. You'll both have a happier day.

12. Be Thankful.

Reflect on all the things that you're grateful for in your life and write them down. You might be surprised at how long your list is! Sometimes changing your focus to what's going on right in your life is all you need to turn that frown upside down.

13. Help Out an Undeserving Stranger

I know we've been mostly talking about our own happiness. But perhaps the greatest joy you will ever receive is when you do something for a stranger.

You may think maybe they are responsible for the mess they're in and not even deserving. But do you know, we are the same so many times. Had we not received grace and mercy in our own lives, where would we be today? Think of the times we messed up in our own lives. And today that mess has been turned into a message.

You know, sometimes helping the least deserving can bring the greatest turnaround in their lives. Undeserved grace, mercy and favour make us question ourselves. Simple acts of grace spring forth a revival in our spirits and help us get our lives back to living on purpose. And it's all because someone believes we deserve a break and a chance.

I know for myself, I would not be where are I am today had it not been for the love,  grace and mercy of so many people that God's brought into my life. And what a miracle He himself has done in my life. Was I deserving? No! Where would we all be had it not been for His love?

My friend, always remember that the list is endless when it comes to ways to brighten your day.

So be creative and try new activities that you might like. Most importantly, seek a way to enjoy each moment and every breath. Every day matters. Your life will be filled with new happiness like never before.
